After covering all of Raleigh sports… why not cover the best Raleigh sport school of them all? WPU!!! The William Peace baseball team opened up their season against Brevard College this past weekend, and the Pacers did not disappoint.

Game 1

Game 1 for the Pacers had an electric feel to it. The crowds and the players were all locked in for game 1 of the doubleheader to open up the new year. They opened up going down 1-0 early in the first, but the floodgates opened up later on in the game.

Logan Barbour, Hunter Ward, and Tyshawn Barrett led the offense in game 1 for the Pacers, as they secured a 9-1 victory against Brevard College. Ward actually was able to put one over the fence, hitting a homerun in his first ever collegiate game.

This is a huge improvement from last years opening game, as the Pacers lost big time in game 1 of their season last year, so it was a good way to start out the season on a good foot.

Fun Fact

This is the first time in WPU school history that they have opened up a season sweeping the first series, going 3-0 on the diamond. This team has a completely different feel to it.

Game 2

Game 2 started out good for the Pacers, as they were the ones who took the lead early. Austin Skipper ended up being the winning pitcher, with Brendan Shea playing a huge role out of the bullpen.

Logan Barbour again led the offense along with Tate Proctor, as they combined for multiple hits against Brevard’s game 2 starter. Tate Proctor was able to hit a triple in game 2, his second of the weekend already!

The Pacers were able to close out the game and win 5-1 on a fairly easy game, but the offense had more in store on Sunday, where they came out SWINGIN’!

Game 3

Game 3 did not start out in favor of the Pacers. Brevard would start out the game going up 5-1 on the Pacers, and boy was their dugout on fire! The players were yelling nonstop, and it seemed like the Pacers might not overcome this hump, but oh they would!

The Pacers would respond later on by scoring 11 straight runs in an inning! That is completely unheard of, and it was able to take the wind out of Brevard’s sails. There were 10 runs scored before an out was even made in the inning.

Pacers offense was led by Jackson May who went 2-2 with 2 runs batted in. Logan Barbour also led the way on offense with multiple hits this game as well.

Freshman Peyton Howard was able to wrap up the game as the winning pitcher, earning his first career win on the bump. Quite a feat for the freshman!

Series Wrap-Up

Logan Barbour was able to win USA South Player of the Week honors after a 9 hit weekend batting .667! Those types of numbers are almost unheard of. That goes without mentioning closing out the series on the mound with 3 strikeouts.

Jackson May, Philip Berger, Hunter Ward, and Peyton Howard made immediate impacts in their first weekend as freshman… so congratulations to them!\
